The Ksamil Islands

The Ksamil Islands

The Ksamil Islands are relatively small, rocky islands located near the shore of the Ionian Sea, offering breathtaking views with turquoise blue waters. The islands are positioned at elevations between 8 and 15 meters above sea level and lie close to each other, creating a captivating and unique landscape for visitors.

Located near Butrint National Park, the Ksamil Islands have a rich natural environment that includes diverse flora and fauna, characteristic of the Mediterranean region.

The flora of the islands features typical Mediterranean vegetation, known as maquis, which includes shrubs and trees like oak, laurel, bay laurel, and myrtle, all of which thrive well in the islands’ climate and terrain. In the coastal and shallow waters surrounding the islands, Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa grow—marine plants that are vital for maintaining biodiversity in coastal areas and play a key role in protecting marine ecosystems from pollution and climate change.

The fauna mainly consists of fish and other marine life, such as octopuses and mollusks, which inhabit the rocky areas. Additionally, visitors may have the chance to spot dolphins that frequent the surrounding waters, enhancing the ecological value of this area.

Overall, the Ksamil Islands represent a unique ecosystem that helps preserve the biodiversity of Butrint National Park and remains an essential destination for nature enthusiasts and tourists interested in Albania’s wild and coastal beauty. Visitors can reach these islands by boat or by swimming due to their short distance from the shore.
