Lëkurësi Castle is located amidst the ruins of the village of Lëkurës, atop a high hill shaped like a pyramid.
The castle has an almost square layout, featuring two rectangular towers on the western wall. The lower floors of the round towers served as storage areas and are equipped with loopholes. The positioning of the towers clearly indicates that the castle’s focus was on controlling the sea. The walls reach about 7 meters in height and up to 2 meters in thickness, and they are lined with a parapet fitted with cannon loopholes, covered with horizontal stones. These parapet loopholes differ from typical firearm apertures, being larger than those used by Ali Pasha Tepelena. The construction style resembles the 17th-18th century houses in Gjirokastra. Lëkurësi Castle housed a garrison of approximately 200 soldiers, and its construction dates back to the mid-16th century.
It is likely that the castle was built in 1537, when Sultan Suleiman attacked Corfu and needed control over the Saranda port and the Saranda-Butrint road, as Butrint was then under Venetian control.
Today, Lëkurësi Castle is an ideal site where history, panoramic views of Saranda, and entertainment come together.
